Basketball Recap: James Island Takes Down Sumter in a Playoff Battle

With a playoff win on the line, James Island rose to the challenge on Tuesday. They managed a 27-21 win over the Sumter Gamecocks. This was payback for the Trojans, who suffered a 57-29 defeat the last time these two teams met.

James Island was led to victory by Jailah Greene and Sarah Ross. Greene posted five points along with seven boards and five blocks, while Ross put up nine points and four steals. Greene is becoming a predictor of James Island's success: when she posts at least three blocks the team is 2-1 (and 9-13 when she doesn't). Alex Gigis also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Sumter's loss came despite strong showings from Kennedy Dantzler and Kamille Gregg. Dantzler scored seven points and seven rebounds, while Gregg had five points and seven boards. That's the most rebounds Gregg has posted since back in December of 2024.

The victory made it two in a row for James Island and bumps their season record up to 11-14. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 23.5 points over those games. As for Sumter, they have been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last ten games, which has put a noticeable dent in their 10-12 record this season.

Coming up, James Island is taking a road trip to take on Ashley Ridge at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Ashley Ridge will roll in looking for their 25th straight win, something James Island surely won't give up without a fight. Sumter does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
