B.J. Young and McCluer North rally in the second half, surviving Chaminade and Florida bound guard Bradley Beal to reach Class 5 semifinals.
Chaminade (St. Louis) became the latest victim of the March Madness upset bug last weekend, falling to the
McCluer North (Florissant) boys 57-56 at the University of Missouri-St. Louis on the strength of 27 second half points scored by Star senior
B.J. Young, who scored all 14 of McCluer North's third quarter points.
The Arkansas recruit finished the contest with a game-high 32 points in rebounding the Stars from an 11-9 deficit after the first quarter. The Stars trailed 29-23 at the half and 42-37 following three quarters.
For
Bradley Beal, who scored 30 points for the Red Devils, the loss brings to an end a brilliant career. Beal ripped the cords for 2,634 career points, fourth best all-time in the St. Louis area. With the upset, the race for the boys big school championship in Missouri is now wide open with the Stars holding the slight favorite tag as play returns to Mizzou Arena in Columbia this weekend for the Show-Me Showdown.
McCluer North (27-4) will take on
Lee's Summit North (21-6) in the 3:20 p.m. semifinal at Mizzou Arena Friday. Chaminade finishes the season 27-1.
Below we take a look at how the small schools should fare as they approach the boys and girls Show-Me Showdown for Classes 3, 2 and 1 next weekend. The final regular season rankings for the state's smaller schools are listed as well.
