League recap: Terry Sanford climbs in state rankings

3A Conference 12 recap October 8, 2013

Terry Sanford moved up to 219 from 247 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in 3A Conference 12. The Bulldogs were able to move up by defeating Union Pines 52-21.

Westover lost to Hoke County 56-14 last week, the largest margin of any game. Derrick Fitts threw for 97 yards and 1 touchdown and ran for 13 yards in the defeat.

Lee County's dynamic duo of Duane Bland and John Nguyen proved tough for Douglas Byrd to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Bland threw for 206 yards and 3 touchdowns and Nguyen had 101 yards receiving. Jerry Pullum helped Lee County's passing attack out by catching 6 balls for 60 yards.

He was 15-28 with 1 interception.

Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, Southern Lee's Emond Caldwell and Aaron Blockmon have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-1 quarterback Caldwell has thrown for 1,188 yards this season, while Blockmon has 39 catches for 887 yards. Pullum from the Yellow Jackets leads the league in rushing with 856 yards.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Lee County takes on the Vikings. As it stands, Burton Cates' team is in first, while Union Pines is in third.

Terry Sanford led 3A Conference 12 in scoring this week after putting up 52 points on Ryan Riggan's team. Jordan McRae threw for 42 yards and 1 touchdown and ran for 96 yards during the win.
