Grapeland had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They breezed past the Deweyville Pirates to the tune of 50-21 on Thursday. The result was nothing new for the Sandies, who have now won six contests by 28 points or more so far this season.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Grapeland to victory, but perhaps none more so than Maleek Johnson, who rushed for 143 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Johnson showed off some serious burst, turning on the afterburners on one carry for 67 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Sean Walker, who rushed for 39 yards and one TD.
Grapeland didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Wells Heersink and Diego Fajardo. Grapeland received some extra help from Cameron Culpepper, whose fumble return for a touchdown made for one of the most unforgettable moments.
The victory was the fourth in a row for Grapeland, bringing their record up to 8-3. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.8 points over those games. As for Deweyville, their loss dropped their record down to 5-5.
As of now, neither Grapeland nor the Pirates have any future games scheduled.
