Football Recap: Lucas Gathers Key Part of Team Effort in Mustangs Win + How To Watch

Portage's game last Friday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Friday. They walked away with a 28-20 victory over the Conemaugh Valley Blue Jays. The Mustangs have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Blue Jays, too.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Portage to victory, but perhaps none more so than Lucas Gathers, who rushed for 150 yards on only 13 carries. Those 150 rushing yards gave Gathers a new career-high. Llheson Walker also helped out as he racked up 103 rushing yards.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Portage was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 318 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 167 rushing yards every time they've taken the field this season.

Conemaugh Valley's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Xzavior Tatum, who threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 11.3 yards per attempt. Eric Korhut also helped with two TDs in total.

Portage now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Conemaugh Valley, they are on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-3.

Portage wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 56-26 defeat against River Valley on the 12th. As for Conemaugh Valley, they have also already played their next matchup, a 41-0 loss against Northern Cambria on the 12th.
