The Tivy Antlers will take on the Victoria West Warriors at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Both teams are coming into the game red-hot, with Tivy sitting on three straight wins and Victoria West on five.
On Friday, Tivy was able to grind out a solid victory over Harlandale, taking the game 42-34.
Tivy can attribute much of their success to Aiden Zavala, who gained 152 total yards and a touchdown, and President Calamaco, who picked up 124 receiving yards and a pair of scores. Calamaco really caught the secondary sleeping when he pulled down a catch that went for 73 yards. Speaking of playmakers, who could forget Brodie Dale, who went all the way with a kickoff return for a touchdown.
Special teams also played a big role in the game for Tivy, adding 18 points to the final score. The biggest highlight from special teams (and perhaps the team as a whole) came courtesy of Dale, who ran a kickoff back for a touchdown. Another bright spot was a punt return touchdown from Josh Wheatfall.
Meanwhile, Victoria West took their matchup on Friday with ease, bagging a 41-7 win over McCollum. Considering the Warriors have won four contests by more than 33 points this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
Tivy better keep an eye on Nolan Boyce. He was instrumental in Victoria West's win, throwing for 244 yards and four touchdowns while completing 73.9% of his passes. Those four passing touchdowns gave Boyce a new career-high. Victoria West's leading receiver Jeret Swanson was Boyce's top target yet again, picking up 109 receiving yards and one TD.
Victoria West's victory bumped their record up to 5-0. As for Tivy, their win bumped their record up to 4-1.
The upcoming game will be a clash of competing strengths. Tivy has relied on air attacks this season and has averaged 298.8 passing yards per game. Victoria West, on the other hand, has relied on a stout run game: they average 219.4 rushing yards per game. So which strategy will prevail on Friday? There's only one way to find out.
