Escanaba had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They snuck past the Freeland Falcons with a 17-13 victory on Saturday. Those 17 points were actually the fewest the Eskymos have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
Escanaba didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Matt Caron and Bryce Bichler.
Freeland's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Max Heyn, who rushed for 93 yards and a pair of TDs, and also threw for 118 yards on 12 of 18 attempts. Kellen East was another key rusher, rushing for 119 yards.
The win was the third in a row for Escanaba, bringing their record up to 9-1. The victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 10.3 points on average over those games. As for Freeland, their loss dropped their record down to 7-3.
Looking ahead, Escanaba will face off against Big Rapids at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Eskymos 14, the Cardinals 11.6) so any points scored will be well earned. Freeland does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
