High school baseball rankings: St. Amant enters MaxPreps Top 25 after knocking off reigning national champion Barbe in Louisiana playoffs

Gators knock Buccaneers from 5A state postseason with 5-4, rubber-game victory.

The MaxPreps Top 25 high school baseball rankings will have a new national champion this year after St. Amant upset top-seeded, and defending MaxPreps National Champion, Barbe (Lake Charles, La.) in the quarterfinals of the Louisiana Class 5A state playoffs.

St. Amant won the first game of the series 7-4, lost the second on a shutout by Barbe's Gavin Guidry, and then won the rubber game 5-4 to eliminate the Bucs. St. Amant enters the MaxPreps Top 25 at No. 18 this week while Barbe falls 12 spots from No. 7 to No. 19 after its season-ending loss.

Dutchtown (Geismar, La.), which has beaten St. Amant twice, moves up from No. 25 to No. 14 and plays West Monroe in the other Class 5A semifinal.

Another former MaxPreps National Champion lost its first game of the season, but stays in the rankings after winning its Mississippi Region 4 quarterfinal series. Sumrall, the 2009 and 2010 MaxPreps National Champion, lost to Green County in the first game of their series, ending a 29-game win streak. The Bobcats rallied to win the next two games, however, and advanced to the semifinals. Sumrall drops from No. 3 to No. 12.

St. Mary's Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.) continues to roll as it defeated University Liggett, the No. 1-ranked Division 3 school in the Michigan Baseball Coaches Association state rankings, for the third and fourth times this season.

The only two teams to drop out were Reno (Nev.) and Edwardsville (Ill.). St. Amant and Rockwall-Heath (Rockwall) join the rankings this week. Rockwall-Heath is ranked No. 1 in Class 6A by Texas High School Baseball.

Dropped out: No. 16 Reno (Nev.), No. 17. Edwardsville (Ill.)

Best game: Dutchtown 3, Central (Baton Rouge) 2. The term "walk-off" brings to mind towering, game-winning home runs that break a tie game in the bottom of the final inning. But a walk-off dropped third strike works just as well. Carter Hanberry raced home on the error in the bottom of the 10th to give Dutchtown the 3-2 opening win in its quarterfinal series with Central (Baton Rouge).

Player of the Week: Jett Williams, Rockwall-Heath. Williams had a grand slam and a double in the first game of the Hawks' series with Garland. He added two more doubles in the second game. Williams is expected to be one of the top shortstops chosen in the MLB Draft this summer.

Games to watch: Dutchtown vs. West Monroe. With Barbe, the No. 1 seed and defending state champion, knocked out of the Louisiana Class 5A state playoffs, West Monroe and Dutchtown, the Noa. 2 and 3 seeds, respectively, battle in the semifinals to see who will be the favorite in the championship game.

Streaks: Silo (Okla.) now has a 27-0 record and raised its win streak to 56 games. The streak is the second-longest streak in Oklahoma history and the 24th longest streak of all-time, tied with Grand Haven (Mich.) from 1960-62. Silo passed Shawnee (52 from 2016-18) and Garber (53 from 1960-61) on the state list and sits behind Capitol Hill, which had 66 from 1952 to 1954.
