Baseball Recap: Blacksburg Takes a Loss

After flying high against High Point Academy last Thursday, Blacksburg came back down to earth. The Wildcats took an 8-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Andrew Jackson Volunteers on Tuesday. The defeat continues a trend for the Wildcats in their meetings with the Volunteers: they've now lost four in a row.

Matty Cody was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. He struck out seven batters over 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. He has become a key player for Blacksburg: the team is 6-3 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-15 otherwise.

Cody wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Jerrett Alexander, who went 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Blacksburg's loss dropped their record down to 7-18. As for Andrew Jackson, their win bumped their record up to 10-15.

Coming up, Blacksburg will venture away from home to square off against Chester at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Andrew Jackson, they will welcome Strom Thurmond at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
