Baseball Recap: Heritage Wins Going Away Against South-Doyle

Heritage had won three straight at home, but on Wednesday they bumped their record up to 21-10 to make it four. They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over the South-Doyle Cherokees. The result was nothing new for the Mountaineers, who have now won 16 matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Derek Hodge looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Gavin Hughes, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Evan Webb, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

As for South-Doyle, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 12-16-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss they have suffered since April 3rd.

On South-Doyle's side, Hunter Tipton made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run and two runs. The Cherokees are 3-1 when Tipton posts two or more runs, but 9-15-1 otherwise.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Heritage is set to challenge their familiar foe Loudon at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, South-Doyle will square off against rival Sequoyah at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
