Bishop Amat had lost four straight at home, but on Friday they dropped down to 9-9 to make it five. They fell 6-1 to the West Covina Bulldogs. The Lancers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Bulldogs apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in March of 2025.
Bishop Amat got a good showing from Kevin Martin, who pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Martin has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Joaquin Ortiz was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and one RBI.
As for West Covina, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-11 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.4 runs on average over those games.
On West Covina's side, Cristian Lazo spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on five hits.
At the plate, Andrew Maldonado and Griffey Moncada did most of the damage at the plate: Maldonado went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI, while Moncada went 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most stolen bases Maldonado has posted since back in April of 2025. Another player making a difference was Landon Hoffman, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Bishop Amat will square off against Fullerton at 3:15 p.m. on Monday. As for West Covina, they will welcome Tahquitz at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Titans' pitching crew has only allowed 3.7 runs per game this season, so the Bulldogs' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
