Mike Flaherty posts 700th boys basketball win

Mt. Carmel coach Mike Flaherty picks up win No. 700.

Mount Carmel (Chicago, Ill.) defeated St. Laurence (Burbank, Ill.) 58-55 in boys basketball to give Mike Flaherty his 700th career coaching victory.

Alex Austin, who paced Mount Carmel with 27 points, told the Chicago Sun-Times, "He doesn't have favorites. Everyone is equal to him. He invests equal time with everyone."

*Thomas Billups, who has won eight state titles, notched his 600th victory as Lanier (Jackson, Miss.) edged Ridgeland (Miss.), 47-43.

*Sanford (Hockessin, Del.) gave coach Stan Waterman his 400th victory with a 72-44 rout of Wilmington Friends (Wilmington, Del.).

*Bob Barnett also won his 400th game at Hampshire (Ill.) with a 48-33 verdict against Woodstock (Ill.).

*On the girls side, Russ Ninemire won his 500th game as Sandy Creek (Fairfield, Neb.) posted a 57-44 victory over Fillmore Central (Geneva, Neb.).

*Switching sports, Bob Conceison notched his 300th boys hockey victory when Burlington (Mass.) blanked Woburn Memorial (Woburn, Mass.), 3-0.
