Ohio high school football playoff picks: who wins the Division IV state title?

By Eric Frantz Nov 30, 2017, 8:15am

Eric Frantz, Drew Pasteur, Ned Freeman and others go head-to-head...who we think wins in Week 15.

Watch the senior receiver and AOW Nominee in action against Massillon Washington. Beachem accounted for three touchdowns in the state semifinal win over the Tigers.

Who wins in Week 15? This is it. For the past seven years I've picked Ohio high school postseason games against Drew Pasteur's Fantastic 50 formula. This season we again added Need Freeman's CalPreps picks into the fold. This week we're adding even more! We extended an invite to several Ohio prep experts and solicited their picks for the state finals. Glad they obliged.

As for last last week...it was again close. Of the 14 state semifinal games, I predicted 13 of 14 correctly. So did the Fantastic 50. This is the second straight week have tied. CalPreps was behind with 11 correct outcomes.

Overall, I maintain a two-game lead on the Fantastic 50 and open a four-game lead on CalPreps with one week left.

Below is a comprehensive look at who each of us - and the guest pickers - thinks wins this year's Division IV state final...

LIVE SCORES, RESULTS & SCHEDULES

Eric Frantz (MaxPreps.com/JJHuddle.com): Tremendous smash-up…or rather match-up that features teams who played last season in a Week 2 non-confernece game (Big Red won 37-18 at Death Valley). Has the makings of a classic. Two passionate fan bases and two programs with multiple state titles. Which one gets it’s next? Massie has had a remarkable run through the postseason with wins over Jonathan Alder, Valley View, Wyoming and John Glenn. The Falcons beat Coldwater in the regular season. Steubenville’s playoff run has produced wins over Salem, Youngstown Money, Perry and Shelby. This is Big Red’s ninth state finals appearance and third straight (lost last two to Hartley). That experience pays off in the program’s fourth state title (and first since 2006)…Steubenville 17, Massie 14.

Drew Pasteur (Fantastic50.net): Steubenville (14-0 D4 R13) by 10 (73%) Clarksville Clinton-Massie (13-1 D4 R16)

CalPreps (Calpreps.net): Steubenville 28-21.

Steve Helwagen (247sports.com): The teams met last year and Steubenville gave Clinton-Massie a 37-18 defeat in Week 2...Steubenville 29, Clarksville Clinton-Massie 21.

Gary Housteau (Bucknuts.com): Steubenville over anybody in division. Great QB play and strong DEFENSE!

Mark Porter (ScoutingOhio.com): Steubenville

Tim Rogers (OPSWA HOF): You have to think that the C-M coaching staff looked at the 206 yards Steubenville surrendered to Shelby in the first half last week and smiled. The Falcons belie their nickname and love to run the ball. While Steubenville rallied to a 35-22 win over Shelby you have to wonder. It also struggled against a 6-4 Youngstown Cardinal Mooney team. Big Red was ranked first in the division at season’s end. They might finish second on Saturday. Pick: Clinton-Massie 33, Steubenville 27

Kurt Stubbs (@ohiohshoops): Two teams that know a thing or two about winning will meet in the DIV finale. Steubenville and Clinton-Massie met in week 2 of 2015 with Big Red securing a 37-18 victory at Harding Stadium. Steubenville has finished runner-up in each of the last two seasons losing to Bishop Hartley by a field goal in both meetings. Clinton-Massie won the 2012 and 2013 DIV titles. Personally, I think Steubenville beat three of the best teams in the field in consecutive weeks in Mooney, Perry, and Shelby with the latter two being undefeated. Massie had to come from behind to beat John Glenn a week ago, and can’t afford to do the same this week. I look for Steubenville to capture the school’s fourth state title with a 28-14 triumph.

Steve Blackledge (Columbus Dispatch/OPSWA HOF): After being edged by Hartley in back-to-back state title games, Steubenville is on a mission. The Big Red played a more demanding schedule that should prove beneficial...Steubenville 31, Clinton-Massie 13.
