Baseball Recap: Umatilla Takes a Loss

Umatilla had lost five straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 12-10 to make it six. They took a 7-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Mount Dora Canes. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Canes this season, with their most recent defeat being a 2-0 loss on Monday.

Umatilla saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Stephan Huckeba, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Another was Aidan Ross, who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI.

As for Mount Dora, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.9 runs over those games.

On Mount Dora's side, Rory Irwin looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Irwin has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in nine consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Evan Nelan and Jose Hernandez did most of the damage at the plate: Nelan went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double, while Hernandez earned one RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.

Coming up, Umatilla will face off against Nature Coast Tech at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. The Bulldogs' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Sharks have averaged an impressive 6.9 runs per game this season. As for Mount Dora, they will challenge Tavares at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
