Basketball Recap: Saturday's Defeat Ends Bayfield's Winning Streak

After a string of four wins, Bayfield's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They took a 59-54 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Montezuma-Cortez Panthers. The Wolverines were not able to make up for their loss to the Panthers from their previous meeting back in January of 2024.

Despite the loss, Bayfield still got an impressive performance from Cooper Roderick, who posted 21 points. The game was Roderick's third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Hayes Malone, who had 11 points.

Trey Hall was his usual excellent self, going 8 for 12 en route to 22 points along with eight boards and five steals for Montezuma-Cortez. Hall is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed four or more in the last three games he's played. Caidin Leonard was another key player, putting up 14 points and six rebounds.

Bayfield's defeat dropped their record down to 10-6. As for Montezuma-Cortez, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 13-4 record this season.

Bayfield will challenge Alamosa at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Montezuma-Cortez, they will take on Centauri at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Montezuma-Cortez comes in on four and Centauri on 15.
