Iowa picked up its second Class of 2012 commitment Monday, getting a verbal pledge from Top 100 guard
Mike Gesell of
South Sioux City (Neb.).
The 6-foot-1, 175-pound rising senior averaged 25.2 points per game as a junior at South Sioux City, leading the Cardinals to a 25-2 record and the Class B state title. The Omaha World named him first team All-Nebraska.
"He's been very special for our program," South Sioux City head coach Terry Comstock said. "He's been our point guard and our leader going on four years now. I joke that he's kind of my Peyton Manning. He knows exactly what we are looking for and we have a lot of trust and faith in him."
Gesell is rated No. 83 in MaxPreps.com's Class of 2012 Top 100, set to be updated later this week. He earned Junior All-American honorable mention praise last winter.
The Hawkeyes, who won out over fellow finalists Nebraska and Stanford, also have a 2012 commitment from
Kyle Meyer, a 6-10 center from
Northview (Duluth, Ga.).
"They told him that he will be the point guard and be
handed the ball from the beginning, so I think that was very exciting for
him," Comstock said of Iowa's pitch.
