Baseball Game Preview: Sonora Wildcats vs. Calaveras Red Hawks

The Sonora Wildcats will take on the Calaveras Red Hawks at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sonora comes in still looking for their first win of the season.

Sonora came up short against Bret Harte on Tuesday, falling 12-2.

Jesse Morrison was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season.

Even though they lost, Sonora hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their strikeout total in three consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Calaveras got themselves on the board against Marina on Saturday, but Marina never followed suit. They were the clear victor by a 12-0 margin over the Mariners. With that win, the Red Hawks brought their scoring average up to 6.3 runs per game.

Evan Janssen made a big impact no matter where he played. He kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 12 over six innings pitched. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in strikeouts. He was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Cohen Curran was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing Two bases. while getting on base in four of his five plate appearances. He is becoming a predictor of Calaveras' success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 0-7 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Mason Wehling, who scored a run while going 3-for-5.

The victory made it two in a row for Calaveras and bumps their season record up to 2-8. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 12.5 hits in those games compared to only 4.25 in the others. As for Sonora, their loss dropped their record down to 0-7.

Sonora might still be hurting after the 8-2 defeat they got from Calaveras in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can Sonora avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
