Football Recap: Stansbury Starts Season with Win Against Skyline

Stansbury gave their fans exactly what they wanted out of a home opener on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 26-23 victory over the Skyline Eagles. The Stallions' offense checked out after the first half but had enough points banked to take the game anyway.

Among those leading the charge was Brighton Reutzel, who threw for 278 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 12.6 yards per attempt. Those 278 passing yards gave him a new career-high. Stansbury's leading receiver Boston Rowley was Reutzel's top target yet again, picking up 110 receiving yards and one score.

Another reason for the win was Stansbury's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Noah Syphus was especially locked on to Skyline's QB and sacked him twice. Broncs Baker was another major factor on D, forcing one fumble and making 12 total tackles (4.0 for loss).

When it comes to explaining why Skyline lost, don't look at Xavier Cocci. Despite the final result, he threw for 301 yards and a pair of TDs while picking up 11.6 yards per attempt, and also punched in one touchdown on the ground. The Eagles also got a significant boost from Jonah Mailei, who ran away from the competition to the tune of 90 yards.

Stansbury wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next matchup, a 53-20 win against Bonneville on the 22nd. As for Skyline, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 46-37 loss against West Field on the 22nd.
