The Lyons Lions are taking a road trip to challenge the Downers Grove North Trojans at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Lyons is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.6 runs per game this season.
Lyons easily dispatched Hinsdale Central on Thursday, but unfortunately both the margin and the ultimate result were a different story in this one. The Lions fell just short of Willowbrook by a score of 4-2 on Saturday.
Lyons got a good showing from Luka Luburic, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That's the fewest earned runs Luburic has allowed over his last four matchups.
On the hitting side, Lyons saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cam Clarke, who went 1-for-3 with one triple and one run. That triple marked the first that Clarke has hit this season.
Meanwhile, Downers Grove North made easy work of Addison Trail on Saturday and carried off a 12-1 win. The Trojans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won ten games by six runs or more this season.
Colin Houlihan looked comfortable as he tossed three innings while giving up just one earned run but no hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.
At the plate, Luke Fordonski was incredible, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, five RBI, and one run. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Edgar Santos, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs.
Downers Grove North always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .571. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in three consecutive contests.
Downers Grove North has been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matchups. That somehow still isn't as good as their 21-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games. As for Lyons, their defeat dropped their record down to 18-7.
Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Lyons hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .327. However, it's not like Downers Grove North struggles in that department as they've averaged .322. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Lyons couldn't quite get it done against Downers Grove North when the teams last played back in May of 2024 as they fell 6-1. Can the Lions avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
