Basketball Recap: Lakin Comes Up Short

After flying high against Elkhart last Tuesday, Lakin came back down to earth. The Lakin Broncs fell 49-38 to the Southwestern Heights Mustangs on Thursday. While losing is never fun, the Broncs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 138th, while the Mustangs are ranked 45th).

Juanita Puentes was her usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 18 points and 11 boards for Southwestern Heights. That's the most rebounds Puentes has posted since back in December of 2023. Another player making a difference was Layla Pearl Kisner, who posted 13 points.

Lakin dropped their record down to 5-5 with the defeat, which was their fourth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Southwestern Heights, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 11-1.

Lakin didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 51-49 victory against Stanton County on the 25th. Southwestern Heights has also already played their next game, a 50-46 win against Wichita County on the 25th.
