Basketball Recap: Zoey Wood Key Part of a Team Effort in Marauders Win

Mt. Vernon won the last time they faced Shelbyville and things went their way on Saturday too. The Mt. Vernon Marauders walked away with a 40-33 victory over the Shelbyville Golden Bears. Given the Marauders' advantage in MaxPreps' Indiana basketball rankings (they are ranked 47th, while the Golden Bears are ranked 138th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Mt. Vernon got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Zoey Wood out in front who posted 11 points along with seven boards and three steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Alaya Baxter, who scored 13 points.

Several Golden Bears players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Maddy Jones, who earned ten points and seven rebounds. Another player making a difference was Jayla Ash, who had eight points and six boards.

Mt. Vernon is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-5 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.8 points per game. As for Shelbyville, their defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-9.

Mt. Vernon has already played their next game, a 45-42 loss against Mooresville on the 21st. As for Shelbyville, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 43-30 victory against Whiteland on the 22nd.
