Football Recap: Pioneer Comes Up Short

Pioneer managed to slip by Mission Veterans Memorial the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Diamondbacks lost 27-6 to the Patriots on Friday. The contest marked the Diamondbacks' lowest-scoring game so far this season.

When it comes to explaining why Pioneer lost, don't look at William Goodloe. Despite the final result, he rushed for 86 yards and one TD on only nine carries. Goodloe's longest rush was for an impressive 69 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per carry total.

Even if they lost, Pioneer's defense still kept up the pressure with three sacks. Damian Hernandez was especially locked on to Mission Veterans Memorial's QB and sacked him twice.

Mission Veterans Memorial's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Benjamin Martinez, who rushed for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and also picked up 47 receiving yards and one score. Those 101 rushing yards gave Martinez a new career-high. Roman Reyna was another key player, rushing for 62 yards and one TD.

This is the second loss in a row for Pioneer and nudges their season record down to 6-4. As for Mission Veterans Memorial, their victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-1.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Pioneer will square off against Edcouch-Elsa at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Mission Veterans Memorial, they will face off against Pace on Thursday. The Patriots will be up against the Vikings' rather soft defense (which has allowed 37.5 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
