Basketball Recap: Niskayuna Comes Up Short

Niskayuna lost a heartbreaker to Albany when they met back in December of 2022, and they left with a heavy heart again on Friday. The Niskayuna Silver Warriors were outmatched by the Albany Falcons and fell 70-40. The Silver Warriors haven't had much luck with the Falcons recently, as the team has come up short the last five times they've met.

Niskayuna lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Ciarra Gonzalez, who dropped a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds. She is becoming a predictor of Niskayuna's success: when she posts at least eight boards the team is 4-1 (and 6-9 when she doesn't). Another player making a difference was Ava Roemer, who posted 12 points.

Nyona Austin had a dynamite game for Albany, dropping a double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Austin a new career-high in steals (three). Jasani Francis Torras was another key player, going 7-for-16 en route to 17 points and three steals.

Niskayuna's loss dropped their record down to 10-10. As for Albany, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won eight of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-4 record this season.

Niskayuna and Albany should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps New York Rankings. Niskayuna (ranked 127th) will meet South Glens Falls (ranked 444th) at 6:00 p.m. on February 24th. Niskayuna is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 52.3 points per game this season. Similarly, Albany will square off against Saratoga Springs at 6:00 p.m. on February 26th up 385 places (26 vs. 411).
