Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Ben Houpt and Myles Howard Lead South Mecklenburg to Victory

South Mecklenburg lost to Olympic back in December of 2024, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Friday. The South Mecklenburg Sabres came out on top against the Olympic Trojans by a score of 64-57.

Leading South Mecklenburg to victory were Myles Howard and Ben Houpt. Howard almost dropped a double-double on 18 points and nine rebounds, while Houpt went 5 for 10 en route to 15 points and eight assists. The contest was Houpt's sixth in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Connor Yett, who went 5 of 9 on his way to 12 points.

Despite the loss, Olympic still got an impressive performance from Maurice Sabb, who went 7 for 8 en route to 19 points and seven boards. JD Terrell was another key player, putting up ten points and eight assists.

South Mecklenburg is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a massive bump to their 11-8 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 68.3 points per game. As for Olympic, their defeat ended a five-game streak of away wins and brought them to 13-5.

South Mecklenburg and Olympic should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings. South Mecklenburg will square off against Berry at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday up 194 places (104 vs. 298). Similarly, Olympic (ranked 81st) will meet Ballantyne Ridge (ranked 546th) at 7:30 p.m. on January 31st.
