Volleyball Recap: Mayfield's Loss Ends Five-Game Winning Streak at Home

Despite a phenomenal run in the regular season, Mayfield couldn't carry that success into this playoff game. They lost 3-0 to the Villa Angela-St. Joseph Vikings on Thursday. The Wildcats were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Vikings earlier this season, when they won 2-0.

While Mayfield had to settle for second, they sure made a game of it, scoring at least 21 points in every set they played. The final score came out to 25-23, 25-21, 25-22.

Gianni Marella paced Mayfield's offense, picking up nine kills. Marella got some help from Luke Smiley and his 23 assists. Marella also made an impact serving: he shared the team lead in aces with Devan Calabrese, racking up two apiece.

Mayfield's defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 18-4. As for Villa Angela-St. Joseph, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won 12 of their last 14 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-6 record this season.

As of now, neither Mayfield nor Villa Angela-St. Joseph have any future games scheduled.
