Preview: Chico Panthers vs. Yuba City Honkers
Chico is 3-0 against Yuba City since December of 2021, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Wednesday. The Chico Panthers will head out on the road to square off against the Yuba City Honkers at 7:30 p.m. Chico is hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses.
Chico suffered their biggest defeat since November 30, 2023 on Thursday. Their rough 65-44 defeat to Pleasant Valley might stick with them for a while. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat Chico has suffered against Pleasant Valley since February 11, 2022.
Chico's loss came about despite a quality game from Rakim Young-Thomas, who scored 12 points along with two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Adam Brott, who scored nine points.
Meanwhile, Yuba City's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Thursday after their sixth straight loss. They took a 59-54 hit to the loss column at the hands of Bella Vista.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Alex Saavedra, who scored 18 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points he has scored all season. Abhi Mehata was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with three steals.
Chico has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost three of their last four games, which put a noticeable dent in their 12-9 record this season. Yuba City's record is now 7-13.
Wednesday's game is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Chico have been dynamite from deep this season, having nailed 40.8% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Yuba City struggles in that department as they've nailed 42.1% of their threes per game this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Chico took their victory against Yuba City in their previous meeting back in January of 2023 by a conclusive 72-47. The rematch might be a little tougher for Chico since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
