Garfield (Seattle, Wash.) defeated Metro League rival Rainier Beach (Seattle) 42-0 last week thanks to a 21-run first inning, the amazing thing was that it wasn't the most runs scored in a game this year.
Or even in one inning.
Garfield scored 21 runs in the first inning and added 17 more in the third in Thursday's game. Garfield had defeated Rainier Beach 17-1 earlier in the season but had scored in double figures in only four other games all year. Rainier Beach, meanwhile, is 0-21 on the season and had given up at least 20 runs on four other occassions during the season.
Garfield could hardly be accused of running up the score, however. The Bulldogs had 21 players with at least one at-bat and 18 of those players contributed to Garfield's 37-hit attack.
MaxPreps has confirmed at least three other games that have had scores of 42-0 or better this year.
Maury (Norfolk, Va.) defeated Washington (Norfolk, Va.) 42-0 in its season opener, scoring 21 runs in the first inning and 15 in the second.
Ovilla Christian (Red Oak, Texas) scored 23 runs in the first inning of a 42-0 win over Heritage Christian (Rockwall, Texas) on March 18. Ovilla Christian has scored at least 20 runs in a game eight times this year, including a string of five games in a row.
East Webster (Maben, Miss.) has the highest-scoring win of the season, defeating O'Bannon (Greenville, Miss.) 45-0 in the second round of a Mississippi Class 2A state playoff game.
The national record for runs in a game is 109 by Atlantic (Iowa), which beat Griswald (Iowa) 109-0 in 1928. Meanwhile Belmont (Miss.) holds the record for most runs scored in an inning with 37 in a win over Ashland (Miss.) in 1999.
