Baseball Recap: Great Bend Starts Season with Win Against Garden City

Great Bend took care of business in their home opener (and then some) on Tuesday. They blew past the Garden City Buffaloes 13-0. The Panthers haven't had any issues with the Buffaloes recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive win against them.

Carson Umphres was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit (and only one walk). Umphres was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, Koehn Ribordy and Slade Mohr did most of the damage at the plate: Ribordy scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3, while Mohr scored three runs while going 2-for-2. Those three runs gave Mohr a new career-high. Ian Premer was another key player, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one RBI.

Great Bend always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .533. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Garden City only posted an OBP of .167.

Great Bend wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 15-1 victory against Hutchinson on the 28th. As for Garden City, they have also already played their next contest, a 7-0 loss against Holcomb on the 28th.
