Baseball Game Preview: Yorktown Tigers vs. Wapahani Raiders

The Yorktown Tigers will face off against the Wapahani Raiders at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Yorktown is coming into the matchup on a three-game losing streak.

On Saturday, Yorktown didn't have quite enough to beat Delta and fell 3-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Tigers have suffered against the Eagles since May 26, 2023.

Yorktown got a good showing from Palmer Jones, who tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. That's the fewest earned runs Jones has allowed since April 3rd.

On the hitting side, Yorktown saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Aiden Witt, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI. That double marked the first that Witt has hit this season.

While Wapahani didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-16), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They walked away with a 5-1 win over Alexandria-Monroe on Friday. The Raiders haven't had any issues with the Tigers recently, as the game was their sixth consecutive victory against them.

Wapahani pushed their record up to 6-4 with the win, which was their third straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games. As for Yorktown, they now have a losing record of 5-6.

The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Monday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Yorktown has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.6 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Wapahani struggles in that department as they've been averaging 7.7 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.

Yorktown skirted past Wapahani 2-0 when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Do the Tigers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Raiders turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
