Softball Recap: San Ysidro Takes a Loss

San Ysidro extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 11-8 in the process. They took a 9-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Sweetwater Red Devils. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Cougars of the 8-7 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

Lizette Herrera made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of Mary Ellen Valenzuela, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

As for Sweetwater, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 15-2-1. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.5 runs over those games.

On Sweetwater's side, Tatyana Mosqueda spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and three unearned) runs on nine hits and racked up seven Ks. Mosqueda has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Audrey Murillo and Gabriella Sena did most of the damage at the plate: Murillo went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI, while Sena went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most runs Murillo has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Valeria Rodriguez, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. San Ysidro will host Southwest SD at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Cougars' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Raiders have averaged an impressive 12.5 runs per game this season. As for Sweetwater, they will take on Montgomery at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday.
