The East Chapel Hill Wildcats are taking a road trip to challenge the Cardinal Gibbons Crusaders at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. East Chapel Hill is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.3 runs per game this season.
Chapel Hill hit East Chapel Hill with a four-run sixth inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Wildcats took a 9-6 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Tigers. Wildcats fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Tigers since on Friday.
Esha Kamath was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Tesla Goldstein, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Cardinal Gibbons had already won 11 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 8.4 runs) and they went ahead and made it 12 on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past the Eagles 11-9. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Crusaders have posted since April 29, 2024.
Bridget Mazzo was a standout: she went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Layce Chappell also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Cardinal Gibbons was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .483. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .321 or higher in 12 consecutive matches.
Cardinal Gibbons pushed their record up to 15-4 with the victory, which was their seventh straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 12.3 runs over those games. As for East Chapel Hill, their defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 9-7.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Tuesday. East Chapel Hill hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 0.4 home runs per game. However, it's not like Cardinal Gibbons struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.8 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
East Chapel Hill might still be hurting after the 15-1 loss they got from Cardinal Gibbons in their previous meeting back in March. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
