Football Recap: Azle Hornets vs. Weatherford Kangaroos
Azle was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fifth straight defeat dating back to last season. They were a single point away from ending the streak, but they lost a 42-41 heartbreaker at the hands of the Weatherford Kangaroos. The Hornets were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Kangaroos apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in September of 2024.
Kaden Haas and Derrek Vowell certainly did their best on Friday to avoid the loss. Haas rushed for 50 yards and one TD, while Vowell threw for 134 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Dj Quimby was nothing short of spectacular for Weatherford: he rushed for 328 yards and two scores while picking up 9.4 yards per carry. Those 328 rushing yards gave Quimby a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Cutter Kennedy, who rushed for 28 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Azle's defeat dropped their record down to 0-2. As for Weatherford, the win got them back to even at 1-1.
Azle will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Denton at 7:00 p.m. on the 19th. The two teams might be coming in a bit winded given these two teams combined for 974 yards in their previous games. As for Weatherford, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 38-27 defeat against Arlington on the 12th.
