Chesapeake extended their losing streak to four on Monday, dropping their season record down to 3-17 in the process. They came up short against the Portsmouth Trojans, falling 15-1. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Trojans this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 15-0 back in April.
Chesapeake saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mason Budd, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.
As for Portsmouth, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten games. That's provided a nice bump to their 11-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.1 runs on average over those games.
On Portsmouth's side, Landon Malone made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he tossed five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. The dominant performance also gave Malone a new career-high in strikeouts (five). He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI.
In other batting news, J.T. Williams and Jacob Roth did most of the damage at the plate: Williams went 4-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI, while Roth went 3-for-5 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. Those three RBI gave Roth a new career-high. Colin Perry was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Looking ahead, Chesapeake will be playing in front of their home fans against St. Joseph Central at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Irish's pitching crew has only allowed four runs per game this season, so the Panthers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Portsmouth, they will head out to face off against Green at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Trojans 3.9, the Bobcats 4.1) so any runs scored will be well earned.
