Basketball Recap: Matthew Goodwin Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Upper Cumberland

Rocket City proved they can win big on Tuesday (they won by 23) and on Saturday they proved they can win the close ones too. They skirted past the Upper Cumberland Rams 65-62. While the Falcons didn't have the best season last year (they finished 12-22), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Rocket City to victory, but perhaps none more so than Matthew Goodwin, who dropped a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. That's the most boards Goodwin has posted since back in January. Another player making a difference was Philip Borchers, who shot 40% from the field to rack up 23 points.

Rocket City was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. They are 9-1 when they've passed the ball that well.

Rocket City has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 64.6 points over those games. As for Upper Cumberland, their loss dropped their record down to 2-5.

Rocket City didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 50-40 defeat against Life Christian Academy on the 8th. As for Upper Cumberland, they will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on CSTHEA at 6:30 p.m. on January 31, 2026.
