Baseball Recap: Grove City Sets Scoring Season-High Against Slippery Rock

Grove City fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Slippery Rock on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Rockets by a score of 10-8. On the bright side, the eight- run performance marked the Eagles' highest-scoring game to date.

Layne Rider was huge no matter where he played even without the win. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances.

In other batting news, Jaxen Pyle was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. Lucas McCreadie also deserves some recognition as he brought in his first RBI of the season.

Grove City is on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-5. As for Slippery Rock, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record up to 3-0.

Looking ahead, Grove City is headed away from home for the first time to challenge Titusville at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Rockets will roll in looking for their eighth straight win, something the Eagles surely won't give up without a fight. As for Slippery Rock, they will welcome Sharon at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Rockets' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Tigers have averaged an impressive 8.8 runs per game this season.
