High school girls basketball rankings: MaxPreps Top 25 No. 1 Long Island Lutheran impressive early on

Kate Koval, Kayleigh Heckel power top-ranked Crusaders to opening wins while Jaloni Cambridge has No. 2 Montverde Academy off to 5-0 start.

The stars have been out early in this high school girls basketball season.

Kate Koval, Kayleigh Heckel and Syla Swords have shined in the first two games for preseason No. 1 Long Island Lutheran (Brookville, N.Y.) as the Crusaders grabbed a pair of wins at the Art Turner Memorial.

Elsewhere, transfer Jaloni Cambridge has paid dividends already for No. 2 Montverde Academy (Montverde, Fla.). The Tennessee native is averaging 23 points per game as the Eagles are off to a 6-0 start.

In California, Kennedy Smith helped No. 8 Etiwanda (Calif.) bounce back from a double-overtime loss to No. 14 Duncanville (Texas). Meanwhile, MaxPreps Co-Freshman of the Year McKenna Woliczko started off her sophomore campaign with a monster night in 42-point victory in the season opener for Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.).



Mansfield Timberview (Arlington, Texas), Clark (San Antonio), Pickerington Central (Pickerington, Ohio) and Bradley Central (Cleveland, Tenn.) all join this first regular MaxPreps Top 25 after a handful of upsets dropped four teams from the rankings.

McKenna Woliczko opened her sophomore season with a 33 and 10 effort in a 95-63 win over St. Joseph's (Santa Maria). UConn commit Morgan Cheli added 22 points, 11 assists and five steals.

The Ascenders beat Link Academy (Branson, Mo.) 58-39 and Northside (Fort Smith, Ark.) 70-46 at the She Got Game Dallas event.

5. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.)

Beat South Grand Prairie (Grand Prairie, Texas) and DeSoto (Texas) in a swing through the Lone Star State and then added a 68-55 win over reigning Arizona Open Division champion Desert Vista (Phoenix) as Izela Arenas dropped 23 points with 13 rebounds.

6. Bishop McNamara (Forestville, Md.)

The Mustangs opened with a 15-point win over Riverdale Baptist (Upper Marlboro) and take on Penn Charter (Philadelphia) on Tuesday at Super Games.

ZaKiyah Johnson had 22 while Reagan Bender scored 19 and Angelina Pelayo added 10 in a 61-60 win over Example Academy (Frankfort, Ill.).

Kennedy Smith earned MVP honors at the La Jolla Country Day Sweet 16 Invitational as the Eagles handled the hosts 65-58. The loss was to No. 14 Duncanville in double OT.

Zania Socka had 18 in a season-opening win over McDonogh (Owing Mills, Md.) before falling 52-49 to Westtown (West Chester, Pa.) at the Art Turner Memorial.

Addison Deal had 20 points, seven assists and seven rebounds while Amaya Williams added 16 points in a 75-29 win over North Torrance as the Monarchs have won all four contests easily.

The Pantherettes own a 78-75 win over No. 8 Etiwanda but fell 63-53 to Summer Creek (Houston) in early November.
