Preview: Needville Bluejays vs. Lumberton Raiders
After two games on the road, Needville is heading back home. They will take on the Lumberton Raiders at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but only Needville walked away with it. They simply couldn't be stopped on Friday as they easily beat Yates 49-14 on the road. With Needville ahead 42-6 at the half, the game was all but over already.
Da'Shawn Burton continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, rushing for 230 yards and three touchdowns on only 15 carries. Burton's longest rush was for an incredible 88 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Keilan Sweeny, who rushed for 79 yards and a touchdown on only eight carries.
Meanwhile, Lumberton waltzed into Friday's game with seven straight wins but they left with eight. They blew past Athens 40-14. Given Lumberton's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 152nd, while Athens is ranked 341st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Lumberton to victory, but perhaps none more so than Lucas Powell, who threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns while completing 75.9% of his passes, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Another player making a difference was Jaddon Ward, who rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns.
Needville's victory bumped their record up to 9-2. As for Lumberton, they have yet to lose a matchup at home this season, leaving them with a 8-3 record.
