Baseball Recap: Lincoln Christian Comes Up Short

Lincoln Christian fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Lincoln Lutheran on Monday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Warriors by a score of 8-7. That's two games in a row now that the Crusaders have lost by just one run.

Caleb DeWitt put in work while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out nine batters over six innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off seven hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and one double.

In other batting news, Grant DeHaan was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring three runs while going 3-for-5. Another player making a difference was Eilam Bryson, who scored two runs while going 2-for-5.

Lincoln Christian has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-3 record this season. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the defeats came by an average of only 1.33 runs. As for Lincoln Lutheran, with the win, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 4-4.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Lincoln Christian will welcome Malcolm at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Clippers will roll in looking for their eighth straight victory, something the Crusaders surely won't give up without a fight. As for Lincoln Lutheran, they will be playing at home against Aurora at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Huskies have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12 runs per game on average), something the Warriors will no doubt try to take advantage of.
