High school football teams with most state titles

By Kevin Askeland Jul 31, 2020, 2:00pm

Sioux Falls Washington holds lead with 42 South Dakota crowns, including 15 in a row.

While California, Florida and Texas have been home to some of the greatest high school football teams over the years, Washington (Sioux Falls, S.D.) has them all beat when it comes to winning state championships. Since 1905, Washington has won a whopping 42 state titles — more than any high school team in the nation.

Washington also has the record for most consecutive state championships, winning 14 straight mythical championships between 1952 and 1965. The Warriors are also 10 state titles ahead of the No. 2 team on the list in Central (Little Rock, Ark.), which has 32.

Below is a list of all high school football teams with at least 10 state championships and includes a top 25 with all state championships listed. The state titles list includes mythical and playoff-determined state championships.

Mythical titles were often determined by newspaper polls or were sometimes even claimed by the school itself. Other state mythical champions, such as those in California, were chosen retroactively. Not all states have readily available lists of mythical champions.
Washington (Massillon) has won 24 Ohio state titles dating back to 1909.
