Basketball Recap: Speedway Sparkplugs vs. Triton Central Tigers
If Speedway was feeling good fresh off their 58-24 takedown of Herron last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Speedway Sparkplugs lost to the Triton Central Tigers at home by a 69-55 margin on Thursday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Sparkplugs of the 41-29 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in December of 2023.

Despite the defeat, Speedway saw an underclassman step up: freshman Madelynn Matelic went 8 of 13 en route to 21 points and eight rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Matelic has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Hayli Clampitt, who dropped a double-double on ten points and ten rebounds.
Speedway has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-7 record this season. As for Triton Central, their win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-5.
Speedway will head out to face off against Southport at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. Southport is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 50.7 points per game this season. Triton Central and Yorktown will round out the year against one another at at 10:00 a.m. on December 27th. Triton Central knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past five games -- so hopefully Yorktown likes a good challenge.
