Softball Game Preview: Montgomery Aztecs vs. Southwest SD Raiders

Montgomery is 8-2 against Southwest SD since May of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Wednesday. The Montgomery Aztecs will be taking part in a tournament against the Southwest SD Raiders at 3:30 p.m. Montgomery will be strutting in after a win while Southwest SD will be coming in after a defeat.

Montgomery will roll into the match after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs on Wednesday, then bounced right back against La Jolla on Monday. Montgomery walked away with a 22-19 victory over La Jolla.

Jordyn Coleman and Jaylene Piceno did most of the damage at the plate: Coleman got on base in all six of her plate appearances with six RBI, four runs, and two doubles, while Piceno scored five runs and stole Two bases. while going 5-for-6. What's more, Piceno posted three RBI, the most she's had since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Nome Gastelum, who got on base in five of her six plate appearances with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI.

Meanwhile, Southwest SD lost 23-9 to San Ysidro on Monday. The loss continues a trend for the Raiders in their meetings with the Cougars: they've now lost five in a row.

Samantha Ramirez was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing Two bases. while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Alana Debaca, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Even though they lost, Southwest SD always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .636. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .636 or higher every time they've taken the field this season.

Montgomery now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Southwest SD, they now have a losing record of 1-2.

Montgomery took their win against Southwest SD in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 18-8. Does Montgomery have another victory up their sleeve, or will Southwest SD turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
