Sparta extended their winning streak to four on Tuesday, bumping their season record up to 8-5 in the process. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 19-18 W against the Greenville Yellow Jackets. While the Spartans didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-20), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Taliya Dauser was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over five innings while giving up four earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one double. Those two RBI gave her a new career-high.
In other batting news, Alexa VanVliet was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high. Jurnee Ross was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two runs, two doubles, and one triple.
Sparta always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .545. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
As for Greenville, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost six of their last eight matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-7 record this season. They have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
On Greenville's side, Brooke Lindquist and Alexa Hyler stepped up to the plate in a big way. Lindquist went a perfect 5-for-5 with two triples, five RBI, and three runs, while Hyler went 3-for-5 with five runs, two triples, and four RBI. Another player making a difference was Aubrie Uebele, who went 4-for-6 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple.
Coming up, Sparta will square off against Coopersville at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. The Spartans will need to watch out since the Broncos have now posted at least ten runs in their last four games. As for Greenville, they are taking a road trip to face off against Allendale at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Falcons have averaged an impressive 9.8 runs per game this season.
