Basketball Recap: Smithfield-Selma Takes a Loss + How To Watch

After flying high against Spring Creek on Tuesday, Smithfield-Selma came back down to earth. The Spartans fell 66-58 to the West Johnston Wildcats on Wednesday. The Spartans have struggled against the Wildcats recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost matchup.

When it comes to explaining why Smithfield-Selma lost, don't look at Johnavon Cox. Despite the final result, he shot 73% from the field on his way to 28 points and six rebounds. Cox's big performance that evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least 17 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jimmy Raiford, who posted eight points.

Jacob Dyson was nothing short of spectacular for West Johnston: he went 9-for-14 en route to 21 points and seven boards. Another player making a difference was Noah Ellington, who shot 67% from the field to rack up 14 points.

Smithfield-Selma's loss dropped their record down to 1-1.

Smithfield-Selma didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 60-51 win against South Johnston on the 21st. As for West Johnston, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 70-45 victory against Gray's Creek on the 21st.
