Basketball Recap: Alyssa Wollenzien's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Reed-Custer over Wilmington

Reed-Custer was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They fell 37-29 to the Wilmington Wildcats. Sadly, that's the third time they've come up short against the Comets this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 49-33 back in December of 2024.

Reed-Custer's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Alyssa Wollenzien, who posted seven points along with eight boards and five steals. That's the most rebounds Wollenzien has posted since back in January of 2024.

Wilmington found their leader in sophomore Sami Liaromatis, who scored 16 points in addition to eight steals and six boards. Liaromatis has been hot for a while, having posted two or more steals the last nine times she's played. Another player making a difference was Skylar Rossow, who earned ten points along with seven rebounds and six assists.

Reed-Custer's defeat dropped their record down to 8-11. As for Wilmington, the win was the seventh in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 16-4.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Reed-Custer will venture away from home to challenge Streator at 7:00 p.m. on January 23rd. As for Wilmington, a feisty cat fight is on tap when the Wilmington Wildcats challenge the Gardner-South Wilmington Panthers at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
