Football Game Preview: Woodruff Wolverines vs. Belton-Honea Path Bears

Woodruff is 0-3 against Belton-Honea Path since September of 2021 but things could change on Friday. The Wolverines will host the Bears at 7:30 p.m. Both teams are coming into the contest red-hot, with Woodruff sitting on six straight victories and Belton-Honea Path on 12.

Woodruff is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Friday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 40-37 win over Christ Church Episcopal. The final result isn't all that surprising considering the Wolverines' considerable advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 33rd, while the Cavaliers are ranked 89th).

It was another big night for Aiden Gibson, who rushed for 311 yards and two TDs while picking up 8.6 yards per carry. Those 311 rushing yards gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Connor Davis, who threw for 202 yards and three touchdowns while completing 73.7% of his passes.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Woodruff was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 381 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

Meanwhile, you can't lose the game if you win every quarter, and that was precisely Belton-Honea Path's strategy against Southside Christian on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Bears blew the Sabres out of the water with a 52-6 final score. Fans of the Bears have seen this all before: every one of the games they've played this season has ended in a blowout of 20+ points.

Woodruff better keep an eye on Noah Thomas. He was instrumental in Belton-Honea Path's win, rushing for 73 yards and a pair of scores on only eight carries, while also throwing for 64 yards and one TD while completing 81.8% of his passes. Cam Robinson was another key back, rushing for 61 yards and one touchdown on only five carries.

Woodruff's victory bumped their record up to 11-1. As for Belton-Honea Path, their win bumped their record up to 12-0.

Woodruff was dealt a bruising 49-15 defeat at the hands of Belton-Honea Path in their previous meeting back in September of 2023. Thankfully for the Wolverines, Marquise Henderson (who rushed for 301 yards and five scores on only 14 carries) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
