Basketball Recap: Oberlin Takes a Loss

Oberlin played a tough game on Saturday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They were dealt a 73-40 loss at the hands of the Independence Blue Devils. The Phoenix just can't catch a break and have now endured six defeats in a row.

When it comes to explaining why Oberlin lost, don't look at Josiah Bowen-Pride. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Bowen-Pride has been hot recently, having posted ten or more boards the last four times he's played. Korrie Freeman was another key player, going 5-for-6 to rack up 11 points along with six assists and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Oberlin smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive boards in three consecutive matchups.

Oberlin's loss dropped their record down to 8-14. As for Independence, they pushed their record up to 14-7 with the win, which was their third straight at home.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Oberlin will be taking part in a tournament against Cuyahoga Heights at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Oberlin is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.7 points per game this season. As for Independence, they will face off against Trinity at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Independence has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
