Baseball Game Preview: Holy Cross Crusaders vs. Honesdale Hornets

The Holy Cross Crusaders will head out to face off against the Honesdale Hornets at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Holy Cross hasn't scored more than a single run for four games straight, a trend the team is eager to reverse.

The home team had won the previous three meetings between Holy Cross and Mid Valley, and Mid Valley kept the tradition alive. The Crusaders lost 11-1 to the Spartans on Monday.

Honesdale not only won on Monday, but they posted their biggest win since March 24th. They put the hurt on Western Wayne with a sharp 10-4 win. With that victory, the Hornets brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.

Jared Ahern was a major factor no matter where he played. He pitched six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off six hits. He also tossed no walks, which is notable because Honesdale is 2-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 2-4 otherwise. Ahern was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 1-for-3. That's the most runs he has posted since back in May of 2024.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Connor Tirney, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4. He also put up a double, which was his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Reese Dennis, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 3-for-4.

Honesdale's win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 4-5. As for Holy Cross, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-6.

Holy Cross skirted past Honesdale 10-8 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Do the Crusaders have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Hornets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
