Basketball Game Preview: Monta Vista Matadors vs. Fremont Firebirds

Monta Vista and Fremont are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2019, but not for long. The Monta Vista Matadors will look to defend their home court on Wednesday against the Fremont Firebirds at 7:00 p.m. Monta Vista will be strutting in after a victory while Fremont will be coming in after a defeat.

While Monta Vista didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They blew past MacDonald 75-43 on Saturday. The Matadors have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three matches by 23 points or more this season.

Meanwhile, Fremont entered their contest against Lynbrook on Saturday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. Fremont opened the new year with a less-than-successful 54-44 loss to Lynbrook. While losing is never fun, the Firebirds can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 932nd, while the Vikings are ranked 276th).

Monta Vista pushed their record up to 9-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.6 points per game. As for Fremont, their defeat ended a six-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 4-6.

Monta Vista lost to Fremont at home by a decisive 55-39 margin in their previous meeting back in January of 2024. Can Monta Vista avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
