Game recap: Long Beach Poly High School Football Team takes down Mater Dei

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) came into Saturday's contest ranked No. 7 in the MaxPreps Freeman Rankings, but was stunned by Long Beach Poly (Long Beach, Calif.), 35-17. Long Beach Poly was ranked No. 30 nationally and No. 6 in the Freeman Rankings for California coming into the week.

The Jackrabbits were up 21-10 at the half after taking the lead on a Tai Tiedemann touchdown pass to John Smith in the first quarter.

Long Beach Poly expanded its lead to 18 points entering the fourth quarter. LBP scored once in the quarter on a defensive touchdown.

The Long Beach school's most effective player was Tiedemann. The sophomore quarterback threw two touchdowns.



Team Team made a difference for the Monarchs. He ran for one touchdown, caught one touchdown and kicked one field goal and two extra points.

Led by Iman Marshall, the Jackrabbits went into the matchup giving up only 16.8 points per game. The 17 points that Mater Dei ended with were well below its average of 37.6 coming into the game. MD came in giving up 14.9 points per game this season.

The defeat comes as a step back for Mater Dei, which notched a 21-0 victory over St. Bonaventure in its previous outing.
