Recap: San Benito Greyhounds vs. St. Joseph Academy Bloodhounds
It was a good run, but the San Benito Greyhounds unfortunately witnessed the end of their four-game winning streak on Tuesday. They took a 37-31 hit to the loss column at the hands of St. Joseph Academy. San Benito was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as St. Joseph Academy apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in November of 2022.
San Benito's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Angelina Reyes, who scored 13 points along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Reyes scored a full 41.9% of San Benito's points, the eighth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Daisy Esquivel was another key contributor, scoring 8 points along with 6 rebounds.
Even though they lost, San Benito were smashing the offensive glass and finished the game with 15 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as St. Joseph Academy only pulled down five.
St. Joseph Academy's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Regina Tovar, who dropped a double-double on 16 points and 12 rebounds. Tovar hasn't dropped below two steals for nine straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Seanah Mireles, who scored 9 points along with 6 rebounds.
San Benito's defeat dropped their record down to 11-6. As for St. Joseph Academy, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matches, which provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season.
San Benito will head out on the road to face off against Mercedes at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Mercedes focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up nine on Tuesday. As for St. Joseph Academy, they will square off against Harvest Christian at 1:30 p.m. on Friday. Harvest Christian knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past 15 matches -- so hopefully St. Joseph Academy likes a good challenge.
